The Conference will take place at São Julião da Barra Fort,
Lisbon, Portugal, on 3 and 4 September 2018.
São Julião da Barra Fort
São Julião da Barra Fort is one of Portugal’s largest maritime fortifications and is impressive for its size and power, besides being the official residence of the Portuguese Ministry of Defense. On foggy mornings and afternoons, the line of its walls looks like the bow of a ship ploughing along the Tagus. It was built to protect the sandbar and access the port of Lisbon. Construction began in the 16th century under King João III and its walls have been witness to some of Portugal’s major military confrontations. It’s well worth discovering its history protected by the ditches and bastions at the entrance to the city.

Lisbon
Lisbon is the capital of Portugal, has less than 600 thousand inhabitants and constitutes a nest of History and Culture and celebrates the crossroads of people.
The important history of this city is based on the constant presence and mutation of cultures. This city was dominated during the Neolithic period by Iberian people who used their port to transport food by sea to the Cornwall (present Sicily). It was inhabited by Celts, Romans and Muslims and it was only conquered by Portuguese people in 1147, by its first king D. Afonso Henriques.
Lisbon is one of the main touristic cities in Europe and in the world. From fado, to football, from mountains to beaches, from 5 star hotels to hostels, from new places like Parque das Nações to St George Castle, from uptown to downtown, you can find everything.
Transportation
Lisbon Airport is well known as a destination for millions of people doing business, tourism, or both. Served by the main international airlines and just 3 hours away from the main European capitals, Lisbon Airport is just a mere 7 km from the city centre.
The airport is located half an hour from S. Julião da Barra Fort by car or taxi. To reach it you can also take the bus 750 outside the Airport at Praça do Aeroporto until Algés station (click here to see the route). At Algés station it is necessary to get in the train station and catch a train to Oeiras (the journey takes only 10 minutes). Another option would be to take the metro from the airport to Cais do Sodré (follow the red line to Alameda station and then change to the green line towards Cais do Sodré. Click here to see the map), where you can board a train to Oeiras.
Then the best option to reach the Fort is by taxi or Uber. If you prefer to go on foot it takes at least 22 minutes.
