“Molecularly Imprinted Polymers and Optical Fiber Sensors for security applications

In the last years, the classic geometries of sensors based on Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) in silica optical fibers are adapted and borrowed for Plastic Optical Fibers (POFs), thus representing a simple approach to low cost plasmonic sensing. POFs are particularly advantageous due to their excellent flexibility, simple manufacturing and handling procedures, great numerical aperture, large diameter, furthermore to the fact that plastic is able to withstand smaller bend radii than glass. Should receptors be used for Bio/Chemicals detection, this low cost SPR-POF platform can be applied in different fields: industrial applications, medical diagnostics, environmental monitoring, food safety and security. For example, by using a Molecularly Imprinted Polymer (MIP) receptor, we have presented experimental results on the selective detection of trinitrotoluene (TNT), significant in security applications. In particular, two POF-MIP different sensor configurations for TNT detection are presented. These sensor configurations are based on the same MIP receptor, one, combined with a Surface Plasmon Resonance platform and, another one, with a Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance platform, both made in D-shaped POFs.
